Most of the cases addressed by the Ombudsman's Office are matters that are brought directly to the office by citizens making complaints. The investigatory powers of the Ombudsman's Office are broad, including freedom of access to agency records and facilities, and the ability to address questions to agency officials at the highest levels. Those investigative powers are complemented by the many years of experience that the Ombudsman's Office has had in working with state agencies.
There is no "red tape" involved in bringing a complaint to the Ombudsman's Office. A simple telephone call to the office will usually suffice. Citizens can also bring their complaints to the Ombudsman's Office by letter or e-mail, or they can visit the office at its location at 1225 L Street, Suite 300. When submitting a complaint to the Ombudsman's Office, it is helpful to include a brief, but thorough, description of the key events, including dates and times involved, and copies of any essential documents relating to the subject matter of the complaint. To simplify the process, it might be desirable for the complaining party to complete one of the following forms to detail the complaint, and then submit it to the Ombudsman's Office via postal mail or e-mail.
